Chief Justice Martha Koome has sent a message of condolence to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family and the people of Kenya following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Raila passed away today morning at a hospital in India where he was receiving medication.
In a message on her own behalf, the entire Judiciary of Kenya, and the Judicial Service Commission, the CJ expressed deepest sympathies and condolences saying they were saddened by the news of his demise.
“We share in your grief and join the nation in mourning the loss of one of Kenya’s most enigmatic and consequential leaders,” said Koome.
She said the country has lost a statesman whose name will forever be etched in the annals of the nation’s democratic journey, while describing him as a towering figure who stood at the confluence of history and destiny.
Koome said Raila through courage, sacrifice, and conviction held together the fragile threads of the nation’s democracy.
“His unyielding struggle expanded the frontiers of democratic participation, and anchored the principles of equality and accountability that underpin our governance today,” said Koome.
The CJ also described Raila as a patriot whose love for Kenya transcended politics, and a leader who was celebrated both in the country and abroad as a result of his vision, eloquence and steadfast pursuit of social justice.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, CJ Koome noted that throughout his illustrious life of public service, Raila embodied the spirit of resilience and the audacity of hope, noting that his unyielding struggle for political freedom, constitutional reforms, and justice transformed Kenya’s political landscape.
She said Raila’s unwavering support for the women’s movement marked him as true believer in inclusive leadership, adding that the support made women to be recognized as equal partners in shaping the country’s political destiny.
“This made women visible, empowered and supported as leaders and decision makers in the country’s national life,” stated Koome.
The CJ mentioned that Raila’s contribution to the rule of law, judicial independence and the progressive principle of constitutionalism has enriched Kenya’s national discourse and inspired democratic movements across Africa.
“As a nation, we celebrate his enduring legacy of courage in adversity, dialogue over division, and hope over despair,” she said.
Koome added, “His life’s work calls upon every Kenyan to remain vigilant in defending the freedoms for which he so tirelessly fought, and to continue building a nation founded on unity, justice, equality and dignity for all”.
The CJ prayed to God to comfort the family and all Kenyans in the knowledge that his life’s mission was not in vain, as his dream of a just, free and united Kenya will continue to guide generations to come.
