Civil society groups want the government to be proactive in provision of security

Isiolo Civil Society groups have appealed to the government to sustain its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property of area residents.

The groups threatened to take the government to court if the cattle rustlers who raided pastoralists and fled with their livestock and resulting in loss of three lives were not accosted and prosecuted within two weeks.

An activist Ms Anab Kassim said the government should be proactive in providing security to the citizens, lamenting that about 100 people lost lives and hundreds of livestock stolen by the criminals from the neighbouring county a couple of years ago.

Ms. Kassim said that citizens have constitutional rights to have lives and property protected by the government because they are taxpayers.

She said over 65 children are total orphans since their parents were killed by bandits who are known by names but the security agencies in the County have not yet confronted them.

Ms. Kassim who was accompanied by the members of Somali Council of Elders added that the government has the necessary resources to deal with the cattle rustlers in the region once and for all.

She said that three people were killed over the weekend and 19 cattle stolen barely 2km from Isiolo County Police headquarters and a day later rustlers drove away 71 camels and 250 cattle at Boji-dera, Garbatulla Sub-County.

Isiolo County Police Commander Moses Mutisya said that security teams in the area had recovered 100 percent of camels stolen near Isiolo Abattoir, and all cattle stolen from Kambi Odha area.

He however added that the security men were tracking down 38 cattle stolen from Boji-dera.

Mr. Mutisya added that Isiolo North has 134 National Police Reservists who have been recruited as back up in the police service in order to patrol the area and respond to calls of stress whenever called upon.

He said that recruitment of new NPRs would start soon and re-vetting of the existing ones would be carried out.
