Chogoria Water project at 98pc complete

Approximately 160 000 residents of Chogoria ward in Tharaka Nithi County are set to benefit from the construction of Chogoria Water Supply Infrastructure project that is meant to increase supply of water in the region.

The project which is under Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation programme, is costing approximately 574 million shillings. It is funded by the African Development Bank and the national government with Tana Water Works Development Agency as the employer.

The project is now 98 per cent complete and is set for operations in August 2022.

Chogoria Water project will ensure water will be piped from the intake at South Maara River to the Kibaranu treatment which has a capacity to treat 15,000 cubic metres per day, which will then be drained to two other tanks for distribution to residents.

The project also involves construction of 374 million shillings Chogoria sewerage treatment works that will be recycling the waste water generated from homes.

Addressing the media during his visit and inspection at the water supply project, Government Spokesman Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna said that many youths have benefited from government projects by securing employment.

The Spokesman expressed his confidence in the project saying it will help the local residents have access to clean water therefore improving peoples’ quality of life.

“This project will help residents here, hospitals and schools have access to clean water therefore improving the lives of the people here,” he said

Oguna revealed that the Renewable and Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Programme is set to benefit more than 26 zones affected by water shortage.

He further disclosed that the government has ensured an increase of water supply in the country from 30 per cent to 72 per cent.

“One of Kenya’s Vision 2030 is to ensure every household has access to clean tap water,” he noted, adding that the government is keen to ensure all regions have access to clean water.

“The government is working to ensure that every household has access to clean water supply, the water should be enough even those practicing farming will have enough water for their farms,” he said.

Oguna further expressed his satisfaction in the Chogoria Water Sewage Treatment Project which cleans dirty household water and recycles it for use saying it will drastically increase the supply of water in the region.

The Chogoria Water Supply Infrastructure project is already supplying water to PCEA Chogoria Hospital and Chogoria girl’s high school and will soon be connected to the Chuka University.
