Charges reduced for Nyeri hawker accused of killing business partner

A  Nyeri  hawker accused of killing his female business partner who was also a renowned political activist had his charges reduced to manslaughter when he was brought to court for plea taking.

Geoffrey Gathenya  who is physically challenged was brought to the dock before Nyeri Principal Magistrate, Philip Mutua carried by two court orderlies.

Gathenya who is accused of killing Joan Muthoni on October 24 at Pembe Tatu Estate within Nyeri Town denied the charges and was released on a Sh.500, 000 bond with a surety of similar amount or Sh.200, 000 cash bail. The case will be heard from December 15.

The accused had his charges reduced to manslaughter after the prosecution contended that the evidence adduced by various witnesses could not prove or sustain a murder charge.

Gathenya  was alleged to have committed the offense following a brawl with the deceased in his house with unconfirmed reports pointing towards a love triangle.

The court directed the accused who was unrepresented to be supplied with witness statements.

Meanwhile, the deceased, who is survived by three children, was buried yesterday at a public cemetery within Nyeri Town in a brief service attended by among others fellow activists.
