Catholic Diocese of Murang’a targets to plant 600,000 trees

The Catholic Diocese of Murang’a has embarked on planting and growing 600,000 trees to mark Diocesan Environment Month which was launched on Saturday.

Speaking in Murang’a during the Annual Presbyterian Assembly (APA) bishop James Maria Wainaina underscored the need for everyone to have special consideration for the environment as we all have witnessed unpredictable climatic conditions over the last few years. “

We have witnessed adverse climatic conditions in the last few years, and it is therefore an obligation for all of us to come up with ways on how to mitigate the challenges” he said

Bishop Wainaina averred that the benefits of trees on planet Earth cannot be under-emphasized as the earth uses them to combat climate change from enhancing air quality to slowing down heavy rains and reducing flooding to preventing excessive heat and removing carbon from the atmosphere

“We all have a role to play so that we can live in a peaceful and healthy and friendly environment, so let everyone plant and grow a tree and save planet Earth”

The Bishop noted that to mark Diocesan Environment Month 600,000 trees will be planted in all the churches an activity that will be foreseen by the Local deanery in all the 54 parishes in Kirinyaga and Murang’a counties.

“I also urge all Kenyans to join the diocese by taking advantage of the rainfall we are having and purpose to grow more trees so that we can collectively ensure environmental conservation,” he added

The bishop further challenged all the stakeholders on environmental matters in the country and all over the world to come up with ideas of modern environmental conservation to mitigate issues being experienced concerning degradation of the environment
