Captured Escapee From Malindi Prison Jailed.

A man who escaped from Malindi GK prison while serving a six month sentence will now serve an additional two year jail term.

The accused Jire Katembe Jira, appeared before Malindi Chief Magistrate Dr. Julie Oseko and was charged that in July 2017, he  escaped from prison while working at the prison officers’ staff quarters.

The court heard that on the 9th day of July 2017 while in lawful custody at the Malindi GK Prison serving six months jail term for offence of stealing,  the accused escaped from the said custody.

In mitigation, the accused said that he escaped from prison to tend to his young family because he was the sole bread winner.

Prosecutor Alice Mathangani told the court that the accused was not a first offender and ought to be jailed.

“He was traced to Malindi Sub County hospital where he was arrested and taken to the Malindi police station and later returned to prison to serve his sentence,” said Mathangani.

While delivering the ruling the Magistrate noted that the accused was not a first offender and that the charges against him were serious.
