Cane farmers urged to register with area chiefs

Teso South Deputy County Commissioner John Kichwen has urged all sugarcane farmers and other stakeholders in the sugarcane sector to formally register with the area chiefs.

Addressing residents during a public Baraza held at Ochude area, Teso South Sub County on Tuesday, Kichwen said that registration would come in handy in combating incidents of sugarcane theft in the area.

“All sugarcane farmers should register with the area chiefs,’ he directed, adding that the move will make it easier to spot potential thieves and conmen.

He advised farmers to take proactive measures to protect their livelihoods and safeguard the importance of sugarcane farming in the community.

“Here in Ochude, we are sugarcane farmers and that is our economic pillar. We have to protect this pillar in any way possible. Now that we earn our livelihood through sugarcane farming, we have to ensure that we uplift it,” he said.

The administrator further advised farmers to adhere to the established procedures when selling their produce to sugar millers.

“Following the right procedures will help you avoid unnecessary problems and ensure you get a fair deal. It will make it easier for us as leaders to help you at any point in case of any challenge,” he said.

At the same time, he warned individuals engaged in cane poaching that legal action would be taken against them.

Cane poaching has since become a major concern to the management of Ole Pito and Busia Sugar factories.
