The Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC) Affairs, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), and Regional Development, Beatrice Asukul, has called for greater accountability among NGOs operating in Turkana County.
Speaking in Lodwar, she cited an incident where an NGO falsely claimed ownership of a project that she had initiated during her tenure as the County Executive Committee Member for Water.
Askul emphasized the need for transparency, stating that her ministry had developed a framework to govern engagements between NGOs and local communities.
“This framework is expected to ensure that development initiatives are community-driven and impactful,” she said.
At the same time Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has blamed debts inherited from the previous regime for slow pace of development. He said he inherited KRA debt in unremitted taxes worth Sh 650 million.
Despite these setbacks, Lomorukai reported progress, having cleared Sh 2.3 billion in pending bills.
Governor Lomurukai also appealed to the national government to consider former leaders from the region, including former Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro, former Cabinet Secretary John Munyes, and former Turkana Central MP John Lodepe for state jobs.
