Eight butcheries and a slaughter house in Ugunja Township, Siaya County have been closed down due to poor hygiene.
The premises were ordered closed by the public health department which said they are a risk to the residents of the town and its environs.
According to the sub county public health officer, Ogaja Ogaja, the decision to close down the facilities was occasioned by refusal by the owners to comply with public health notices to improve sanitation.
“The affected butcheries and the slaughter house are in a pathetic state and we have in the past issued notices to their owners to improve them but in vain,” he said.
The public health officer said that the butcheries have been selling meat in the open and untidy premises.
Ogaja said the facilities will remain closed until their owners improve them to the satisfaction of the public health department.
