Business set to thrive in Diani during festivities

Business operators in Diani are expecting increased commercial activity, following the influx of visitors attending The BAG Festival in Kwale County.

Accommodation providers, restaurant owners and transport operators say the event has led to a rise in demand for their services, with many visitors arriving ahead of the weekend.

Lilian Njeri, an Airbnb host in Diani said bookings had increased several days before the event, with most guests travelling from Nairobi, Mombasa and other parts of the country.

“Our apartments have been fully booked since the beginning of the week. Many of our guests are coming specifically for the festival, and such events provide additional business opportunities for accommodation providers,” she said.

Restaurant operators also reported an increase in customer numbers as visitors frequented eateries and entertainment outlets.

“We have increased our stock to meet the expected demand because more customers have started arriving,” said a restaurant owner along Diani Beach Road.

Transport service providers, including taxi operators, said they had experienced a rise in bookings as visitors moved between accommodation facilities, beaches and event venues.

“We have received more transport requests than usual. Visitors require transport to different locations throughout the day, creating additional income opportunities,” said Mohammed Hamza a taxi driver.

Some visitors said they had combined attendance at the festival with other leisure activities during their stay in Diani.

“I chose to spend the weekend in Diani after considering several options. Besides attending the festival, I also plan to visit some local attractions,” said Ann Mutua, a visitor from Nairobi.

Another attendee said the trip provided an opportunity to explore local businesses in addition to participating in the event.

“I have visited several cafés and purchased souvenirs from local traders. The festival gave me an opportunity to spend the weekend here,” she said.

Said Mlaleo, a local trader in Diani observed that events of this nature create business opportunities for various sectors, including accommodation, transport, food outlets and small-scale enterprises.

“When there are major events in Diani, many businesses experience increased customer traffic. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators and small traders all benefit from the additional visitors,” said Mlaleo.

Business owners called for continued support for events that attract domestic tourists, noting that such activities can contribute to economic activity beyond the peak holiday seasons.

Tourism stakeholders said organized events continue to play a role in stimulating domestic travel and supporting businesses that depend on the tourism sector in Kwale County.
