The County of Busia has finalized plans to host the third Border Marathon Edition scheduled to take place at Busia Polytechnic on April 9th this year.
Speaking to the press at the venue on Wednesday, Border Marathon Co Coordinator Sarah Martha said that the activity is an annual event that has been taking place in the County until it was disrupted by Covid 19.
“This year we are organizing for the third edition which will take place at Busia polytechnic on April 9, which is Easter Sunday,” Martha said.
She added that the aim of the activity is to build and advocate for health and wellness through behavior change and talent promotion in order to achieve sustainability and build a wealthy border community.
“This marathon will give a platform for the residents of Busia to come out in large numbers and participate in the race,” she said adding that assorted health services like blood donation, cancer screening, diabetes and pressure testing, nutrition screening, HIV sensitization, HPV vaccination offered at the venue.
The official urged the local residents to come out in large numbers and get the opportunity for free medical checkups.
“The competitive races will be 15 kilometers and 10 kilometers all starting at Busia Polytechnic and ending at the same place,’ she said adding that there will also be fun races for families, corporates and children of 5 kilometres, two kilometres and 100 metres and assorted kids games and entertainment.
She explained that the event will be a fun race where people will not only try to keep fit but also enjoy because it will be an annual event.
“We will be having awards for winners of various categories for both men and women in 10 and 15 kilometre races,” she said.
The official disclosed that the event has been organized through partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, County Government of Busia, USAID Dumisha Afya, Shabiki Sacco and Emuria FM, local Supermarkets and Banks.
She appreciated Athletics Kenya, Busia branch for their support in organizing for the border race and their coordination.
