Police in Bungoma have impounded contraband cigarettes worth Sh2 million along the Webuye-Malaba Highway.
The driver of the Toyota vehicle registration No KCE 019 E ferrying the goods was also arrested at Ndengelwa police check point while heading towards Uganda.
Speaking to the press at the Bungoma Police Station, Bungoma South Deputy Sub-county Police Commander, Patrick Gogo, said Police Officers at Ndengelwa Road Block were forced to shoot at the tyre of the fast moving vehicle after the driver refused to stop for checks.
“This vehicle was moving very fast, the driver violated the traffic law, so the best option was to make him stop and flatten the tyre to immobilize it and to check what was happening,’’ he noted.
The driver identified as Joseph Karanja, was arrested and taken to Bungoma Police Station as investigation continues and he awaits to be arraigned in court.
“This will serve as an example to other culprits engaging in such businesses, I ask drivers to follow traffic rules and regulations as well as respect the orders by the police while on the road,’’ he said.
Gogo urged Police Officers on road blocks to be vigilant and crack down all traffic law offenders and those transporting contraband goods.
He said the operation on the Webuye-Malaba Highway is ongoing and those found violating the law will be nabbed and taken to court.
