The National government has banned the grazing of livestock within Baragoi town and its outskirts as a measure to beef up security.
This is after 14 people were killed a week ago during a cattle rustling incident that saw over 1,000 cattle stolen while another person was seriously injured two days ago after he was shot by unknown people near Natiti Primary School.
Chairman of the Samburu Security Committee and Samburu County Commissioner Abdrizak Jaldesa asked herders to vacate the town with immediate effect failure to which their livestock will be confiscated in order to enhance security in the area.
He said that continuous grazing of livestock in Baragoi town and its environs is causing conflicts among herders from two communities living there.
“Whenever herders from Samburu and Turkana communities spot each other conflict must arise and Baragoi town should be a buffer zone to contain the conflict,” he said.
He noted that the directive is already being implemented through Samburu North Deputy County Commissioner and elders from Bendera and Ngilai villages.
Jaldesa asked everyone to play a role by ensuring that there is peace in the area and provide conducive environment for students and travelers to go on with their normal activities.
“If we have good will from everyone and work together, we will bring long term peace among communities living there and ensure people travelling there and back are not afraid due to insecurity,” he said.
