Bright student appeals for help to complete studies

A former Mang’u high school student who scored grade A-Minus, in Kenya certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is appealing to well-wishers to help him complete his studies at the University where he dropped out for lack of fees.

Jamal Hassan Waqo joined Mangu high school under sponsorship of Equity foundation “Wings to Fly”, scholarship programme but the bank did not consider him for further education after KCSE which he sat in 2015.

Speaking to KNA,  Waqo, who was accompanied by former Isiolo Parents Association Chairman Ismael Galma, said that he had visited the bank severally to seek support at the local branch but his appeal was unsuccessful.

According to documents he possesses, the former Mang’u student joined Eldoret University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology (IT) but was forced to drop out due to fees challenges while in third year.

He has since been working as a casual labourer in various places in Isiolo town and has also been hired by private schools as a teacher after efforts to raise fees to get readmitted to the University failed to bear fruits.

He said he has made up mind to change the line of training and has now registered with Mount Kenya University (MKU) where he is pursuing a bachelor of Education degree.

Waqo is appealing to well-wishers, the County government of Isiolo, his former high school old students and political leaders to come to his aid.

He said he had been restraining himself from indulging in drugs like other youth in the Bulapesa area of Isiolo town that have ruined their lives hoping that an angel would one day come his way and help.

“My unemployed parents cannot afford to educate me since other siblings are young and still in school,” Wako added.

Mr. Galma, the former Isiolo County Parents’ Association chair who is also a Community Civic Educator at the County Government urged the Governor and Isiolo North MP Mr. Joseph Samal to help bright students from poor families.

Youth who accompanied Waqo challenged the County Government to provide full scholarship to bright students and demanded the devolved government to publicize the list of students that benefited from the County bursary.
