Students from Zetech University have been given a major boost after the institution announced plans to construct hostel facilities within the school, offering security boost especially to those in their Weitethie Campus who reside in the hyena infested estate.
The project, according to Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene will begin early next year and will grow progressively, according to the demand.
Addressing stakeholders at the institution, the VC while noting that students need to study in decent and affordable accommodation, said they have enough land and are working on the resources to commence the project so as to give their students a better environment to learn.
“Next year, our focus will be on infrastructural development, particularly constructing accommodation facilities for the students. We know how inconveniencing it is for students to get accommodation outside the institution. The houses will be affordable though they will be constructed progressively according to the demand,” he said.
This will come as a boost to the students who have been forced to rent houses in the nearby Weitethie estate for those who study in the Mang’u Campus in Juja Subcounty, and in Ruiru town for those in their Ruiru campus.
To those in Weitethie Campus, this comes as good news as it will offer security to them away from the marauding hyenas that have wreaked havoc in the estate in the recent months.
Several mothers and children have been mauled to death by the animals whose numbers seem not to reduce.
The students welcomed the move saying it would ease scares that they had been having when living in the estate.
Though they have never been victims of hyena attacks, they said news of the marauding animals often mauling residents is a concern since sometimes they study till late and have to move through the estate to their homes late.
“This is good news having to stay inside the institution as it creates a good learning environment. It also offers security away from the marauding hyenas that have been wreaking havoc to the locals,” said Philip Kabue, one of the students.
The VC at the same time announced that the institution will also be working on constructing facilities for sports to boost their competitiveness in co-curricular activities.
He said the facilities will be state of the art, in several fields of sports and will boost the fitness of their students and staff.
“This is another area of focus to make the institution a sporting powerhouse. It will also boost our competitiveness but also will offer our students a better learning environment,” said Prof. Munene.
