Bomet enhances HIV treatment adherence campaigns

Department of Health Services in Bomet, has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at leveraging community health systems to combat interruptions in Antiretroviral Treatment (ART) among individuals living with HIV and AIDS.

County AIDS and STI Coordinator, Stephen Kambich, spearheaded the new exercise designed to integrate Community Health Promoters (CHPs) into the default tracing process for patients undergoing ART.

Speaking during a meeting for Public Health officers and Health Promoters on Wednesday, Kambich highlighted the success of the initiative, noting significant improvements over the past three months.

“The integration of Community Health Promoters into our default tracing efforts has led to noticeable advancements in patient adherence and overall treatment continuity,” Kambich stated.

The initiative’s objectives include involving Comprehensive Care Clinics (CCCs) in partnership with CHPs to review data and track treatment adherence more effectively.

Additionally, the team has set out to update a directory of Community Health Assistants (CHAs), across Bomet and neighbouring counties, including Narok, Kericho, and Nyamira, to streamline patient tracking and support.

Leonard Lang’at, Assistant Director of Public Health, emphasised the importance of meticulous monitoring in his remarks during the meeting.

“It is crucial for Public Health Officers, CHPs, and CHAs to diligently trace patients who have defaulted from their ART regimens. This rigorous tracking will ensure accurate and timely reports on HIV prevention and treatment outcomes in our county,” Lang’at urged.

The initiative represents a significant step forward in improving HIV treatment adherence and emphasises the county’s commitment to enhancing health outcomes through community-based solutions.
