Bomet County celebrates World Toilet Day with Dig Deep Africa

Bomet County, in collaboration with Dig Deep Africa, marked World Toilet Day at Kapchekosion Comprehensive School in Kipsonoi Ward, Sotik Sub-county.

The day, dedicated to inspiring action against the global sanitation crisis, highlighted the county’s progress and partnerships driving sanitation efforts.

Speaking during the event, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Dr. Joseph Sitonik celebrated Kipsonoi Ward’s achievement of becoming Open Defecation Free (ODF) zone.

“This milestone demonstrates what is possible when communities, government, and partners work together to prioritize health and sanitation,” Dr. Sitonik remarked.

The event also featured a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) exhibition, where partners showcased innovative solutions aimed at improving sanitation.

Dr. Sitonik emphasized the importance of collaboration, urging all stakeholders to adopt joint strategies to sustain and expand ODF initiatives. He also extended his appreciation to the partners supporting WASH programmes in the county.

According to Dig Deep Africa, safely managed sanitation is essential for preventing disease and saving lives.

In Bomet County, approximately 50% of the population still lacks access to safe toilets. However, significant progress has been made through partnerships.

Since 2020, the number of ODF villages in Bomet County has risen from just 4 to an impressive 270, benefiting over 110,000 people who now live in communities where every household has access to a toilet and a place to wash their hands.

“This success is a testament to the power of partnerships and community-driven action,” noted Dig Deep Africa representatives.

The organization continues to collaborate with the county government and other NGOs to sustain these achievements through the implementation of the Bomet County WASH Masterplan.

Dr. Sitonik further stated, “Our goal is aligned with Kenya’s target of becoming ODF by 2030. Together, we are building healthier communities and ensuring a brighter, safer future for all.”
