Bishop calls Christians to pray for the country during Easter holidays

The Catholic Bishop of Murang’a Dioceses Rev. James Wainaina has appealed to Christians to utilize the Easter holidays in praying for the country.

Wainaina on Thursday said the country needs prayers this time the covid-19 pandemic is hitting many families.

The Bishop speaking after conducting Holy Thursday mass at St. Mary’s cathedral in Murang’a cautioned Kenyans against engaging in activities which may occasion more spread of coronavirus.

He observed that adhering to the Ministry of health protocols on covid-19, will help to contain spread of the virus and thus allow the government to open up the economy.

“It’s my appeal to all Christians across the country to take this moment we are commemorating the death and resurrection of our Christ to pray for healing in our country. The covid-19 pandemic has wrecked many livelihoods in the country,” said Wainaina.

The Bishop noted that many people take holidays to engage in activities that may affect their future lives like excessive abuse of alcohol saying with the government’s directives aimed to control the virus, people should remain in their homes and pray.

“When there are holidays, some people take the opportunity to engage in things which might haunt them in the future. With directives to avoid gatherings, my advice is that members of families should remain at home as this will also help contain spread of the disease,” he added.

Mass celebrations during the holidays in local churches within the diocese, yhe bishop said, will be conducted in adherence of the covid-19 regulations.

“In Murang’a church services are allowed to continue but we will ensure all directives outlined by the interfaith council on covid-19 are strictly followed. We won’t allow churches to become podiums for the spread of covid-19,” he added.

Wainaina further said Christians have freedom to go for covid-19 vaccination saying no one is being forced to take the jab.

“The government provided the vaccine and it’s voluntary. If you are willing to get the jab, please go for it. If you don’t want to because of your personal reasons, no one will force you,” he further stated.

The bishop further cautioned political leaders to avoid organizing meetings that may spark the spread of covid-19.

“Our political leaders should be in the forefront to fight this disease but not to organize and call for meetings which may lead to more spread of the disease. Every person must be responsible if we want to effectively fight the pandemic,” concluded Wainaina.
