Police in Busia have intercepted more than 600 kilograms of bhang valued at Sh18 million.
Speaking to the press at his office Monday evening, Busia County Police Commander Maxwell Nyayema said that the consignment was intercepted by police officers on patrol along Kisumu Busia road on Monday.
‘When our officers were on patrol, they placed a snap check roadblock near River Suo when they intercepted a white Nissan vehicle destined for Kisumu branded Rafiki Funeral home,” he said, adding that on interrogation the driver of the vehicle told them that they had brought a dead body to Mumias.
Nyayema further said that the driver told the officers that he was carrying luggage for the mourners on his way back but the police officers acting on suspicion inspected it, only to realise that they were sacks of bhang covered with a polythene bag.
“We have the driver, the vehicle, and the consignment in our custody,” he said, adding that the officers are continuing with investigations.
He added that the consignment must have come from Uganda through the porous border before being loaded into the vehicle that was destined for Nairobi.
The police Commander urged the local residents to volunteer information to police officers arguing that such drugs are detrimental to the community.
