BETA projects in Siaya on course despite initial challenges

The implementation of the government’s Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) projects in Siaya are on course despite initial hiccups, Principal Administrative Secretary in the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Juliana Yiapan has said.

Speaking in Siaya after leading a delegation from the Prime Cabinet Secretary’s office to verify the status of the projects, Yiapan said the projects, among them Affordable Housing and modern markets witnessed unavoidable challenges such as delayed geological reports which were crucial.

“The affordable housing contractor needed to know the geological formation of the project implementation site which would guide several crucial issues such as the depth of the foundation given that the projects entail high-rise buildings” said Yiapan who was flanked by senior officials, among them Nyanza Regional Commissioner, Flora Mworoa, Siaya County Commissioner, Norbert Komora and county government officials.

She said that the availability of the crucial documents has seen the contractor move with speed and already the construction of the 882 affordable housing units in Siaya town was at the foundation stage.

Yiapan, who also inspected the construction of the modern market, said the facility was at 40 percent despite initial delay by the contractor.

She said that the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, in liaison with the State Department of Housing and the office of the County Commissioner, has put in place mechanisms to ensure that the contractors will recover the lost time.

Under the BETA flagship projects, the government is undertaking several initiatives, such as implementation of the edible oil value chain, expansion of the acreage under cotton production and transformation, decentralization and digitization of State Law Office in Siaya and other counties in Nyanza region.
