Bars closed in Embu as police intensify crackdown

Authorities in Embu have closed 58 liquor outlets across the County, as a crackdown on illegal brews intensifies.

County Commissioner (CC), Jack Obuo, said the Multi-agency operation had also arrested 84 suspects and arraigned them before the court, to rid the county of illegal and harmful brews.

He said the affected premises were those flouting various rules, including operating without permits, as well as those in villages and near schools.

“Bars will be strictly allowed to operate in gazetted areas only,” the CC said, maintaining there will be no let-up in the war.

Speaking, Tuesday, during a youth forum organized by REINVENT at the Talent Academy Hall in Embu Town, the CC said they were also targeting another category of individuals who were operating their liquor premises outside the stipulated time.

“It is not strange to find some operators opening their outlets as early as 7 am and continuing late in the night, which will not be allowed going forward,” he said.

Two weeks ago, the County Government revoked the licenses of over 500 bars operating within residential areas and those bordering schools.

“In the next five days, we want to ensure all the over 500 bars, we are targeting are closed,” he said.
