At least 12 drivers and a motorcycle rider have been arrested in Kisii County during the national crackdown on rogue motorists during the ongoing festive season.
Twelve Public Service Vehicles and a motorcycle were also impounded in the operation led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ligala Opiyo.
Opiyo said they were arrested for overloading, speeding and carrying excess passengers. Opiyo alleged the drivers had also operated faulty vehicles, lacking licenses and uniforms.
The crackdown had to be suspended until an alternative method was devised after rogue drivers and riders, panicked nearly causing accidents after being flagged down.
The ACP clarified that excess passengers will not only be arrested, but drivers and conductors also since all could have committed an offense.
He maintained the government ban on probox type of vehicles from operating as PSVs accusing them of overloading and carrying passengers in the boot.
This comes even as heavy traffic jam has continued to be experienced in Kisii town and its environments during the festival season.
Residents appealed to the government to prevail over the land grabbers who had encroached into road reserves leaving little space for motorists.
