AMREF donates over Sh.180m to support fight against Covid-19 in nine counties

Nine counties are set to receive a total of Sh.180m from AMREF  to support the fight against Coronavirus.

According to a Programme Director, HIV, TB, Malaria and Non-Communicable Diseases at AMREF, Dr. Bernard Langat, the nine counties would each receive Sh.20m that would also address emerging issue like drastic drop in the number of patients seeking treatment in hospital due to Covid-19 fears.

Uasin Gishu County is among the nine counties to receive the support targeting Covid-19 isolation centres and frontline healthcare workers.

Speaking at the County Headquarters in Eldoret when he presented a donation of Personal Protective Equipment, Dr. Langat said AMREF  seeks to compliment other donors as the country tackles the spread of the pandemic.

The Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor, Daniel Chemno who received the donation on behalf of the county called for more support from donors especially in the area of enhancing the capacity to test more people.

Chemno said there was a likelihood that there were more Coronavirus positive cases in the county than what the Ministry of Health has confirmed because testing capabilities were still low.

Uasin Gishu County has so far recorded about 100 positive Covid-19 cases, majority being long distance truck drivers.

The County Chief Executive for Health, Eveline Rotich urged the Uasin Gishu residents to continue strictly observing the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health to protect themselves from Coronavirus.

“The Covid-19 cases continue to increase in Uasin Gishu and other parts of the country and this calls for all of us to collectively and personally take responsibility to stem the spread of the disease,” said the CEC.

She however, expressed gratitude that none of the frontline health workers have been infected by the disease in the county.
