Alarming as rabies outbreak ravages

Residents of Kuresoi South in Nakuru County have been urged to be alert following an outbreak of rabies at Tachasis village.

Nakuru County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Leonard Bor said that the County government was on its alert over the outbreak and has already dispatched its officers to the area to assess and mitigate the situation.

In a statement to area residents, Mr Bor urged locals to be extra vigilant and report any case to the officers in charge for prompt action.

Additionally, he advised that any meat for consumption purposes should be slaughtered at the County’s slaughter house, duly inspected, stamped and transported in strict compliance with the ministry of Health regulations.

The County officers on the ground will help in the surveillance effort and give updates where need be until the situation is brought under control.

Both animals and human get infected with rabies through bites and scratches from an infected animal.

Animals such as cats, dogs, donkeys among others when infected exhibit symptoms of hyperactivity while humans bitten by infected animals get a burning sensation at the wound, fever and a pricking feeling.

Rabies is a viral disease that can be best prevented through vaccination hence the need for a continuous sharing of information to help curb its spread.
