Afraha to host major sports events ahead of completion, CS Ababu

Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has promised to ensure Nakuru County’s Afraha stadium hosts major national sports events, even as Governor Kihika warmed up for African Cup of Nations, AFCON 2027.

CS Namwamba acknowledged the milestones made in the refurbishment of Afraha stadium to international standards, saying he will make Nakuru a stop for major sports events starting this weekend.

“Nakuru County will play host to major sports starting this weekend and we promise going forward to make the county a host for major events as requested by Governor Kihika,” noted Namwamba.

The CS promised to send a team to assess the state of Afraha Stadium, promising that the events may come “sooner than you imagine” depending on the state of the stadium.

“I will be here in Nakuru this weekend to launch part of the Motorsports’ Autocross Series, that will be happening in this county. We have also ensured that the WRC Safari rally in Naivasha fall on the Easter Weekend to ensure that our people are at the centre of hosting this event,” announced CS. Namwamba.

The CS was speaking in Nakuru, when he graced the launch of the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), for the years 2022 to 2027.

Governor Kihika, whose plan is to see the stadium completed and even considered for AFCON 2027 expected to be hosted in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, noted that the need to develop the infrastructure and grow businesses as a way of uplifting the standards of living of the County residents.

Already, the tartan track has been laid, with major works also having been completed in line with the standards of Sports Kenya’s advice for a pitch and running track, to international standards.

“Guided by the notion of continuity in government, we chose to complete the stalled projects during the first year in office. It is meaningless and a waste of taxpayers’ money to fail to complete stalled projects just because you didn’t initiate them. Afraha Stadium and construction of Keringet high altitude Sports Academy are some of these projects,” said Kihika.
