As the festive season sets in, Mombasa County Commissioner (CC) Mohamed Nur has exhorted residents to share information with security agencies to aid in taming incidents of insecurity.
Speaking at the Mwahima Stadium in Likoni Sub-County, where leaders and residents braved the early morning downpour and waterlogged grounds, to attend the Jamhuri Day fetes, the County Commissioner said they had tightened the noose on miscreants, and added that their days were numbered.
Nur conceded that Kisauni and Likoni Sub-Counties have had a series of criminal cases. However, he pledged that the police will leave no stone unturned to apprehend the few criminal elements wreaking havoc.
The ongoing East African Community games in Port City, the CC noted, are progressing well, with no single security case owing to the collaboration between residents and the County Government of Mombasa.
Residents were encouraged to report criminal cases and to record police statements to secure convictions in courts amid a surge in phone-snatching cases.
“Phone theft is rampant. We warn people not to purchase second-hand phones, you don’t know if the owner was killed and robbed.
We should do our best to make the City a haven of peace. We will strive to look for jobs for our youths and rehabilitate those affected by drug abuse,” stated the CC.
Mombasa residents were urged to register with the Social Health Authority to benefit from the government’s transformative healthcare program under the Taifa Care.
CC Nur further advised the youths to use responsibly the internet during the holiday season not to besmirch others but to do online jobs.
Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said they are installing 280 Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) in every nook and cranny of the six Sub-Counties to enhance surveillance.
“The cameras will have face recognition. If you commit a crime we will capture your face,” stated Governor Nassir.
Nassir urged residents to register with the Taifa Care programme and promised to lead a mass enrollment drive in all the 30 wards. The devolved government will pay for vulnerable families.
Governor Nassir put on notice Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres against imposing any school fees on learners as from January saying learning in ECDE will be free to ease the financial burden on parents.
“We will disburse funds to the schools to cater for their recurrent expenditure,” he said.
The Governor noted that they have an elaborate plan to resolve the poor drainage systems and storm water works are ongoing.
Nassir also said that 13 access roads have been constructed in Likoni and five more are in the offing.
