An Administration Police Officer shot and killed his colleague on Thursday evening at the Milimani Public Servants’ Club in Kakamega.
The Kakamega Central Sub County Deputy Police Commander (SCDPC), Sammy Nyongesa said the deceased, Philemon Kipkoech, had been assigned to guard the residence of the Western Regional Police boss in-charge of logistics, Patrick Wambani.
He said a team of officers led by the Regional Criminal Investigation Officer and the County Police Commander visited the scene and established that the victim had been fatally shot from the left side piercing through the head.
“He was lying down facing the ground while still holding his AK 47 rifle which was loaded with 29 rounds ammunition,” he explained.
The DSCPC added that the witnesses informed the police that they had seen an Administration Police Service officer leaving the scene hurriedly armed with a rifle.
He stated that following the description, the officers managed to arrest and disarm the suspect Philip Wahome who was attached to Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) in Kakamega Central Sub County and deployed to guard duties.
The officer said they also recovered blood stained desert boots from the suspect and he is now in custody at the Kakamega central police station awaiting arraignment in court.
He stated that the motive of the killing could not be immediately established and the investigation is ongoing.
The body was taken to the Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary.
