A scare ensued at Mwakitawa Secondary School in Voi Sub-county on Monday afternoon after a mysterious fire gutted down a cubicle at the institution.
Twelve beds, mattresses and students’ personal effects were destroyed before the fire was contained.
Speaking to KNA on Tuesday, County Police Commander Saidi Kiprotich said the fire erupted when students were in class and no one was injured. He added that a probe has been launched to establish if it the fire was caused through arson or by electric fault.
“The students are safe and that is what matters most. We are investigating what could have been the cause,” he said.
The incident comes at a time the police say they have intensified patrols around schools following several cases of low-level unrest and mass walk-outs of students from learning institutions.
Last week, over 200 students from Mwasere girls walked out of their school, protesting against bad food and management’s high-handedness. That same week, Mwakichuchu secondary was closed after the institution ran out of water.
On Monday, hundreds of boys from Mwambiti Secondary school stormed the education office in Voi protesting over shortage of water and poor hygiene in the school. That same morning, several students from Moi High school Kasighau walked out of school citing water shortage.
Such incidences have placed the authorities on high alert with police working closely with officials in education office to monitor the situation.
“We are closely monitoring the situation in schools in collaboration with the officials to prevent any security-related incidence,” said the county commander.
