A standard three pupil was buried alive while excavating soil from a quarry at Lwala village in Ngodhe Sub Location of Suba North Sub County, Homa Bay County.
The deceased, identified as Doreen Akinyi Oketch (12), a pupil at Kuge Primary school, met her untimely death when she went to excavate the soil for smearing their mud-walled house on Wednesday afternoon.
Confirming the incident to KNA, Assistant Chief of Ngodhe Sub Location Charles Ngoe said that the minor who was in the company of other siblings died instantly after a heap of loose soil collapsed and buried her alive inside the quarry.
Ngoe added that the minor was caught unaware by the debris when she was in the process of removing the soil from the cave and could not escape the tragedy.
The administrator further said that villagers who rushed to the scene were unable to rescue her since they found when the soil had already covered the entire body.
At the same time, Ngoe said the villagers were forced to pull out the minor from the soil but unfortunately she had already died.
He appealed to the parents in the region to desist from sending their children to the quarry to excavate soil saying such activities were dangerous to the lives of the minors.
The body has been moved to Kirindo Mortuary awaiting postmortem and police officers have launched their investigation into the incident.
