Murang’a automates health systems to enhance services

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has launched a Health Management Information System (HMIS) to help improve the delivery of medical services at Murang’a Level Five Hospital.

This system will record and store health data so that it can be retrieved and processed to improve decision-making and service delivery.

According to the governor, the automation of health services at this hospital, which is the first of its kind in a level five hospital in the country, will see patients registered electronically and their treatment records stored electronically.

“Murang’a County Government is committed to service delivery. We are the first county-level five hospital to have this automated system in the Republic of Kenya,” he said.

Kang’ata explained that the system will ease access to medical services in the hospital as patients will not be required to carry their records forms from one station to another. The patient will then receive the details of their treatment course on their phones. They can then retrieve the details anytime and anywhere, in case they need to seek health support services from other facilities.

The system will also aid in treatment as the doctors will easily access the medical histories of repeat patients and treat them accordingly.

The system will also help monitor the consumption of various drugs and help in restocking those drugs as demanded.

He intends to introduce the system in all hospitals across the county, starting with the level four hospitals.

The governor also launched CCTV cameras in the hospital to help with monitoring service delivery and also deter losses of public funds caused by the theft of drugs from the hospital, something he deemed a major challenge.

Kang’ata at the same time donated wheelchairs and other mobility assistance items to persons with disabilities in collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a.
