The Mboone River Bridge along Ankamia and Amungenti road in Igembe South sub-county of Meru County constructed more than 20 years ago has been a site of danger to hundreds of residents including school going children due to its pathetic condition.
The small bridge which had no barrier rails on both sides has been causing a lot of anxiety among residents who were always worried about their children as they crossed to and from school.
Now it has been jubilation to the residents as the Kenya Rural Roads Authority in conjunction with national government constructed rail barriers along the bridge to ensure the safety of the residents.
It is said that an elderly woman once fell off and died while she was trying to make way for a speeding motorbike along the said Bridge.
The residents of the area expressed their gratitude to the area Member of Parliament Johnpaul Mwirigi for the move saying that their long-term cry has been heard.
They said that the rails will prevent pedestrians and motor vehicles from falling off and enhance safety as well.
Karugi Salome, a resident in the area further urged the MP to consider improving and expanding the small bridge since it is impassable during the rainy season.
