BasiGo Company in collaboration with Kenya Power, launched Kenya’s First Public Electric Bus Charging Station in Buruburu.
Speaking during the launch, BasiGo Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Founder, Jit Bhattacharya said the move marks a major step towards the goal of making electric buses accessible to all people in Kenya and around the continent.
He noted that convenient and reliable charging infrastructure is being the most critical charge for the electric buses around the world.”
The CEO said that the Station has three charges which are capable of charging six buses, but is set to grow and be in a position to charge thirty electric buses by the end of this year.
Bhattacharya further highlighted that the number of electric buses in Nairobi have increased to 17 from two last year.
“There are three electric charging stations in Nairobi: Kikuyu, Cabanas and Buruburu,” Bhattacharya added.
“Our team contains seasoned entrepreneurs who have been working and innovating within electric vehicle technology, mobility in Africa, and renewable energy financing. We are a team dedicated to creating an inclusive sustainable mobility revolution in Africa and I thank them,” said Bhattacharya.
The CEO said that BasiGo is an e-mobility start-up looking to revolutionize the public transportation sector, by providing public transport bus owners with a cost-effective electric alternative to diesel.
Speaking at the event Kenya Power Director and Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Siror, said that it was his first engagement to the public and he was pleased to be in partnership with BasiGo and vowed to work with the Company in developing the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
“Do not despise the days of small beginnings because it’s a journey towards success. I want to appreciate BasiGo for the wonderful Initiative they took,” said Siror.
He at the same time announced that they will work hard in hand with BasiGo, in providing infrastructure in the public transport and anyone who wants to move in this space. He congratulated BasiGo for their flexibility model of Pay per use.
