Teachers in Marsabit County have been urged to integrate Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) expertise in their teaching in order to improve on student’s academic performance.
The Marsabit County Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director, Charles Omwoyo asked tutors to help their learners by embracing digital literacy which he said has a workable curriculum delivery approach.
Omwoyo made the remarks at the closure of four day training for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) at Moi girls secondary school, where he challenged teachers to address the issue of dismal performance in the subjects.
The County Director asked the participants to apply the knowledge gained during the training to better performance, adding that problem solving and handling of technology programs would prepare students for the job market.
“I urge you to use situation analysis methodologies and need-based delivery approach in order to bring about the needed attitude change towards mathematics and science subjects in learners,” he said.
The director pointed out that teachers have to be adaptive to the technological advancements in order to clear existing gaps in the learning environment.
The trainees numbering 145 from across the county commended the government for the teaching upgrade, saying that the newly learnt ideas would enable them to get the best results from the students.
A physics and mathematics teacher at Marsabit Boys’ Secondary School, Omar Kasim said many schools in the county have been posting poor results in science subjects in the national examinations.
Kasim blamed the situation to negative attitude towards science subjects by students from the region. “I appeal to the government to ensure that similar trainings are sustained,” said the teacher, adding that construction and equipping of computer labs should also be prioritized.
The CEMASTEA main objective is to offer in-service education and training for mathematics and science teachers through a two-tier cascade system where those trained at county level are tasked with the training of those at lower levels.
