The Mwingi North Member of Parliament, Paul Nzengu is calling on government to flush out Somali herders who have infiltrated Kitui County from neighbouring Tana River County.
The MP noted that the camel herders have driven their animals into farms of farmers resulting to conflict between the pastoralist and the farmers.
He was speaking on Monday at Kasiluni area in his constituency during the burial of a man shot dead by the Somali herders last week.
Nzengu threatened to lead his constituents in flushing out the armed pastoralists if the government fails to evict them.
“Unless the Somali herders are flushed out, the frequent killings and other acts of lawlessness will persist,” the MP
warned.
They said he will this week meet Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Dr. Fred Matiang’i to address the issue, regretting that normalcy is unlikely to return soon.
The deceased was shot dead by the camel herders while grazing his cattle in Kakunguu area of Ngomeni ward of Kyuso Sub County in Kitui County.
He was shot twice by the armed members of a pastoralist group who were also grazing their camels when he came face to face with them.
The deceased was looking after cattle with his son who escaped from the belligerent gunmen and reported the killing to family members who then informed police.
Following the killing, tension is high in the area and many residents have fled their homes for fear of more attacks by the herders.
