Following heavy rains pounding most parts of the country, floods have wreaked havoc to more than 102 households who have since been displaced in Chepalungu Sub County, Bomet.
The rains pounding the area have seen mud-walled buildings collapse while the water has sunk latrines rendering Bingwa and Siongiroi locations unfit for human occupation.
According to Bomet County Disaster Management Officer Stanley Mutai, the affected families have been moved to saver grounds and have had to vacate their homes.
Mutai said since Saturday, rains pouring in the area could affect more families saying there was need for early evacuation.
He said though there was early notice concerning potential disaster many of the victims did not heed the warning.
As of now the affected families were being hosted at nearby primary schools’ classes while some are living in makeshift shelters. Children and the elderly are the most affected in the calamity while the victims were in dire need of relief food and medicine.
The Red Cross Society Bomet Chairman Cheruiyot Baliach said they had joint effort with the County Government of Bomet and the National Government in distribution of food, clothing and bedding among other essential items.
Baliach said the victims were also in need of psycho-social support especially the children who were most traumatised.
While at that, health officers have beefed up disease surveillance as waterborne diseases are likely to break out following overflowing latrines which have discharged human waste to water sources.
