Kenyans asked to protect media rights

Kenyans have been asked to refrain from curtailing or stopping media personalities from exercising their roles and duties to inform and educate the public.

Speaking to the press Wednesday in Kericho, the ODM director from Bomet Mr. Ronald Ngeny said that the recent attack on media personnel by some hooligans at Kapsoit trading centre in Kericho should be condemned in the strongest words possible.

Ngeny said freedom and independence of the media is guaranteed in the laws of Kenya and specified in article 33 and that right should not be denied or curtailed by anyone.

He appealed to the police to carry out investigation on the incident and bring to book those who participated in the attack of Ms. Winny Chepkemoi an NTV camerawoman and correspondent on Monday while covering a group that had assembled who wanted to join other Kenyans in the Raila called demonstration.

Ngeny who is also a former director of KTDA in Konoin, Bomet County said that food prices especially maize meal had shot up making it hard for ordinary citizens to afford. He called on the concerned authorities to look for solutions to the rising costs of living in the country.

The secretary to the Kipsigis Council of elders Mr. Edwin Kimetto condemned the invasion of private property and unwarranted destruction of property in the last Monday demonstration in the capital city.

Kimetto said the invasion of former President Uhuru Kenyatta family land was ill advised.

He called for peace and sobriety and good reason to prevail in the country.
