Ojaamong calls for empowerment of self-help groups

The  Busia  Governor, Sospeter  Ojaamong has appealed to self-help groups receiving grants and interest-free loans to  plough back the profits for expansion of their business enterprises.

The  governor underscored the need for concerted efforts to tame the high unemployment rates in the country through empowering self-help groups economically.

Ojaamong  made the remarks when he presided over a funds drive in aid of Padeto Self Help Group at Kamuriai Primary School in Teso North Sub County on Saturday.

“Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) hold the key in reversing the trend of unemployment through allocation of enough grants to such groups to enable them engage in various activities that they have a comparative advantage in,” he said.

During the fundraising that realised over Sh.700, 000, Ojaamong called for unity across the county, urging residents to shun politicians propagating divisive politics.

“Let us give our MCAs time to deliver on their mandate rather than engaging them in constant criticism,” he appealed.

The  Group Chairman, Winston  Etete  thanked the Governor for presiding over the funds drive, saying the group will fulfill its objectives ofimproving the welfare of members through investments in income generating projects with quick returns.
