Mombasa County Government plans to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and street lights to enhance security surveillance across the six sub-counties.
Speaking after a meeting between elected leaders and the County Security Team Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said they have noticed emerging pockets of crime in some areas and have put measures to curb the menace.
The leaders, Governor Nassir says, have given the names of hotspots areas and challenged the police to intensify patrols to secure them.
The Governor assured youth who were engaged in the ‘Mombasa ni yangu Programme’ that the initiative will commence soon. The Programme was launched last year in December and more than 2000 youths were recruited. The youth worked for one month before the programme was halted indefinitely.
Governor Nassir also promised to roll out a programme that will engage learners on weekends and during school holidays to prevent them from social vices such as drug and substance abuse and joining juvenile gangs.
Acting Mombasa County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi assured Mombasa residents of adequate security as they observe the holy month of Ramadhan.
He said, “We are giving a guarantee to the residents of Mombasa that they will celebrate the holy month of Ramadhan peacefully, without any security concerns.”
The Ag. County Commissioner appealed to parents whose children are below 18 years to monitor and prevent them from engaging in criminal activities while in school.
He divulged that plans are underway to organize for mentorship programmes when learning institutions close.
The meeting was attended by County Assembly Speaker Aharub Khatri, MPs Mohamed Machele, (Mvita) Rashid Bedzimba, (Kisauni), Mishi Mboko (Likoni) and EALA’s Suleiman Shahbal.
