Stop this habit of illegal cutting of trees, Governor Mutula warns

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo has warned individuals who are destroying the environment by illegally cutting down trees and burning charcoal in the area that they will be prosecuted.

Speaking at Masokani, Mbitini Ward during International Day of Forests (IDF), Kilonzo decried increased tree logging and burning of charcoal that have been witnessed in the recent past.

“Kindly stop this habit of illegal cutting of trees for timber and burning of charcoal to save our environment,” cautioned Kilonzo.

He said his administration is committed to conserving the environment by preserving all water sources and forest as part of the initiative to combat climate change.  “We must work together to conserve our environment to mitigate the effects of climate change that has been experienced in the area,” reiterated Kilonzo.

Consequently, the Governor appealed to the residents to plant more trees especially this rain season.

On his part, Makueni County Commissioner Mr. William Kaimba warned individuals who are destroying public utilities that they will face the full force of the law.

“I urge the security team to immediately investigate and arrest those persons who are destroying water wells, engaging in charcoal burning and illegal cutting of trees in public forests,” noted Kaimba.

Kaimba also encouraged the residents to plant and grow trees in their homes to mitigate the effects of climate change.
