CT scan to help curtail high number of referrals

JM memorial level four hospital in Ol kalua, Nyandarua County is now set to start offering CT scan service, a move that will help curtail the high number of referrals to other hospital for similar service.
According to the hospital’s administrator Mary Njuguna the machine was part of the Sh430 million consignment delivered by the national government and has been fully installed. The equipment, she added was only awaiting the official launch to start operation.
Other equipment delivered to the hospital by the national government included X-ray, ultrasound, seven dialysis machines and incubators.
Njuguna told the County Development and Implementation Coordination Committee (CDICC) Friday led by the county commissioner Boaz Cherutich that it will be a relief for the Nakuru county level five hospital where referral for head scans were being made to an average of six accidents patients per week.
“The hospital has been referring some of the serious head injury cases to other hospitals in Nakuru. We are glad that CT facility is finally here, only waiting for handing over to start operations,” said Njuguna.
She regretted that motorcycle operators were highest victims seeking the service, a situation she attributed to their failure to wear protective gear.
“Many cases of head injuries handled by the JM Memorial hospital are from motorcycle accidents. We have been handling about five cases of head injuries as a result of accidents in a week,” said the hospital administrator.
According to police reports, at least 29 people have died as a result of motorcycle accidents in the county in the last three months.
On their part, Cherutich and the deputy director of the presidential delivery unit Louisa Matemo urged for quick hand over of the facility to ensure that services were delivered without further delay.
