Government to build more Medical training institutions

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is set to have additional campuses in the country to cater for the increasing numbers of students.

According to KMTC chairman Prof. Philip Kaloki, the current 64 training colleges in the country are not able to accommodate the increasing population of medical students hence the need to have additional branches.
He made this assurance in Nyamira town Friday during the handing over of two buses meant for the County’s KMTC branch and another for Bondo at Kenya Medical Training College Nyamira Campus grounds.
“We need to assure all of you that our tradition is to ensure we have competent trainees and adequate numbers to be deployed in our country’s health facilities so that our people can benefit from the universal healthcare services fronted by our President,” Kaloki said.
He noted that the current population of students that stands at 38,000 will be increased to 50,000 in the near future with the ongoing admissions.
This will help the government attain the required number of healthcare workers to address the current shortage.
Prof. Kaloki said that 86 new colleges will be established to cater for the increasing numbers of students across the country. It will bring to a total of 150.
Kaloki was hosted by Nyamira county commissioner Amos Mariba, County Police Commander Catherine Mugwe and the school’s Principal Mr. Peterson Ongeri.
KMTC chief executive officer Michael Kiptoo was also present.
Nyamira KMTC Principal, Peterson Ongeri said the buses will be a great resource as they will enable the students to access various practicing institutions while taking their studies.
“We are grateful that our students will have easy movement from one place to another for their practical lessons,” he said.
Ongeri said that the college is at the moment constructing a multi-purpose hall that will be complete in one year at a cost of Sh 300 million.
“Our college has a very high population and therefore there is need to have a multipurpose hall that can accommodate the numbers in the college, we will allocate funds for the program so that we can complete the building in the next financial year.” he confirmed.
