Machakos county starts public consultative forums

Machakos County Government has begun public consultative forums in all Sub counties which will help in the process of formulating the 2023 Machakos Fiscal strategy paper.

Machakos Governor Ms. Wavinya Ndeti speaking at Kathiani Assistant chief’s Camp said that the public participation forums will help in the Process of formulating the 2023 Machakos County Fiscal Strategy Paper and Medium-Term Expenditure Framework Budget Financial year 2023/2024-2025/2026.

“I believe a key pillar of good governance is citizen participation, I am glad we have come together this far and even more delighted that we have now entered the final leg of the budget preparation for the financial year 2023-2024 and the medium-term expenditure framework (MTEF),” said Ndeti.

She said that their commitment is ensuring the realisation of the true spirit of devolution, particularly by giving the people power to identify local projects and invest in projects that will transform their lives.

Ndeti further added that with great power comes great responsibility and her administration will live up to the trust that Machakos County residents have placed in them.

The governor said that she not only wants to ask for the residents’ views but to also truly engage them throughout the process.

She called upon a team of County Executive members, chief officers and technical staff to take note of what the Community proposes for adoption to ensure their service delivery improves the livelihood of the people.

“The journey began in October 2022 when we commenced the preparation of the county integrated development plan CIDP for the five-year period 2023-2027,” said Ndeti.

“I personally went around the county and engaged members of the public at the grassroots where every Ward identified ten key priority areas that needed immediate intervention, we are here to reinforce areas of collaboration and partnership as we embark on finalising the budget preparation,” she added.

She further directed the county officials to interrogate any lapses that may exist on how they are conducting the public participation process and propose areas of improvement.

“Public participation should not only be about meetings, we should be rethinking the models that are cost effective, including harmonisation of public participation, so that it is conducted through our various departments,” said Ndeti.

Ndeti said that she is committed to the spirit of public participation as provided by the Constitution and her administration will continue to involve citizens in planning and managing public resources, especially those allocated for county development.

She affirmed her commitment that her policies will reflect an understanding of the needs of the people and determination to solve them through her vision, which is anchored on the three pillars of food security, social-economic empowerment and infrastructure development.

The Governor pointed out that Machakos County is committed to work with the national government in all aspects of development to maximize growth and the county has proposed water projects worth Sh2.5 billion to the National government.

She noted that the National government has promised to collaborate with the county to drill 83 boreholes in schools, construct 38 dams and two water pans spread across the county within a span of 5 years.
