Operations begin at the newly commissioned bus terminus

Matatu operators in Narok town are a happy lot after operations commenced at the newly constructed multi-million bus terminus.

The operators lauded the county government for constructing the new bus terminus saying they have operated along the streets for a long time.

James Mbugua, of Narok Line Sacco said that for more than fifteen years he has worked in the town, the vehicles were picking and dropping passengers at the roadsides or petrol stations.

He is now a happy man as his new operating ground has modern sheds, ablution block and enough parking spaces for the vehicles.

Another driver David Ntete, who operates matatus under the Wareng Sacco asked his fellow motorists to observe rules and regulations set at the bus station so as to maintain order in the newly built stage.

Ntete also admitted that traffic congestion that was common in town will now be a thing of the past as the matatu vehicles will be stopping at the bus station.

The bus terminus that was constructed under the Kenya Urban Support Program at a cost of Sh100 million was opened by the Ministry of Lands, Public works, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary (CS) Zacharia Njeru.

The bus station that was built for two and half years has a capacity of 120 parking slots and 180 stalls.

During the commissioning of the bus terminus, Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu said the project was funded by the World Bank at 70 per cent and 30 per cent was contributed by the county government.

“Forty security personnel have been deployed in town to ensure no vehicle drops or picks a passenger along the road,” he said, reiterating that the offenders will face stern punishment.
