Former Embu Women representative, Ms. Rose Mitaru has urged the government to consider Embu County for food relief.
Ms. Mitaru wondered why the county was not among the regions considered as hardest hit by hunger stressing some pockets in the county were in dire need of relief food.
“Areas of lower Embu which includes Mbeere South and North have been hit hard by drought and hunger and the government should consider supplying relief food,” Ms. Mitaru observed.
She also urged elected leaders in Embu to unite and address the current hunger crisis and other problems affecting area residents.
Her sentiments were echoed by Kithinji Kiragu, an Economist and Management consultant who said the current hunger in the country should be addressed through concerted efforts of the government and nongovernmental organizations among other stakeholders.
“The government should consider reviving and strengthening the services of extension officers to grassroots level in order to boost food production in the country,” said Kiragu who doubles as Embu College chairman.
The two were speaking at Kamurugu village, Mbeere South during the burial of Anatasio Njue NJeru, 38, who was an internal auditor at International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD).
Njue who had contested for Member of Parliament seat, Mbeere South but lost to Geoffrey Kingangi died on April 9 after a tragic road accident along Garissa-Matuu road.
Kiragu eulogized the deceased as a brilliant mind who had dedicated his life to help the community especially the youth.
“Njue was passionate about the youth affairs to an extent that he ensured youth from poor families in Mbeere South accessed education up to university,” he noted.
He added the deceased had started a sports academy with his own money, something even the government has not done. He urged the county government to ensure the vision is brought to completion.
Njue is survived by wife Anna Wairimu and a son.
