Governor Gladys Wanga launches scholarship programme

Over 270 bright and needy pupils selected to join form one in Homa Bay county have benefited from a scholarship funded by the County Government of Homa Bay to a tune of Sh130 million this financial year.

The support spearheaded by Governor Gladys Wanga dubbed “Fins to swim” targets to ensure no child in the county dropped out of school due to lack of fees.

Speaking when she flagged off this year’s beneficiaries, Wanga said that the support would cover secondary as well as university education on condition that they performed well.

The Governor thanked the County Assembly of Homa Bay for allocating funds for the programme within a short period after the constitution of the Assembly following the last general elections.

“There is nothing greater than education since it is the equalizer and brings positive changes in the society,” the Governor said.

She said her administration was focused on ensuring that the standards of education in the county were improved by channeling more resources to the sector.

“We don’t take anything for granted and I want to thank the education department for the good work as well as the Assembly that has ensured there is money,” Wanga said.

She said they had distributed the scholarships to the children drawn from all the forty wards.

The County Executive Member for Education Martin Opere said the scholarships benefited students who scored 350 and above.

The official urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the Governor’s efforts to secure resources for them by working hard.

Each of the beneficiaries were issued with a mattress, metallic box, bucket, dictionary and maths log table and sanitary materials.
