Two Nyamira County employees died on Monday morning in a grisly accident at Sironga bus stop along the Kebirigo-Kisii road.
The Deputy Director for Human Resource Management, Enoch Nyakundi and Bonyamatuta Ward administrator, Paul Nyatuka were reporting to work in Nyamira when they met their untimely death. They were travelling from Kisii in the late Nyakundi’s car with three other occupants.
The late Nyakundi was trying to avoid hitting a motorcyclist, when he hit an oncoming truck head-on and died on the spot along with the rider he was avoiding.
An eye witness at the scene said the car driven by Nyakundi was speeding which made him unable to control the vehicle in an accident which he (witness) termed as avoidable.
“The car was relatively on high speed. The accident could have not happened. The driver of the car ‘jumped over the speed bumps hitting and killing the rider before he swerved and hit the on-coming truck and dying on the spot as well,” he said.
The three other passengers were seriously injured with one (a sub county administrator) being in critical condition who later succumbed to injuries while being transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. The remaining two are still recuperating at Nyamira’s level 5 hospital.
The facility’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Sam Ombati told KNA that the two are out of danger and would be discharged soon.
The incident was confirmed by Nyamira base commander Chief Inspector Hassan Osman who urged motorists to be watchful.
Barely two months ago, another assembly staff, Justine Ogechi, was killed in a similar accident near Omogonchoro Market on his way to work in Nyamira town from Kisii town.
The remains of Nyakundi and Reagan Tumbo and the motorcyclist were taken to Nyamira level 5 hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
