Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) has attributed the shortage of water in parts of Kisumu city to rapid population growth and climate change.
This has exerted pressure on the company’s infrastructure and water sources affecting supply in Kibos, Manyatta and Migosi areas.
KIWASCO Managing Director (MD) Thomas Odongo said the situation has been exacerbated by vandals who prey on the company’s meters and pipes.
This, he said has seen the company incur losses due to non-revenue water lost when the pipeline is interfered with. He urged members of the public to be vigilant and report the vandals to the police to tame the vice.
He added that the company was working closely with the national government and the county government to scale up the supply.
The partnership, he said has seen water coverage increase to 90 percent over the last five years adding that through the expansion programmes, the area was on course to attaining 100 percent coverage.
He asked area residents to store enough water to navigate through the interruptions experienced in the area.
