County plans to construct 14 new sports fields

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has said the county government will construct 14 new sports fields across the county.

He said he will collaborate with the National government in the program and expressed his willingness to invest Sh100 million towards establishment of the sports fields and other sporting facilities.

“In 2027 Kenya may host the African Cup of Nations and I know Mumias Sports Complex Centre will be one of the venues, when we host the tournament. We will also complete the Bukhungu International Stadium in collaboration with the National Government,” he said.

Speaking during an award ceremony for the winners of the Governor’s Football Bonanza held in Mumias, the governor said that the resumption of commercial flights at the Kakamega Airstrip had opened up the county and there was need to improve infrastructure in the county.

Umri FC emerged the best male football team during the tournament walking away with Sh500, 000 while Mwira Ladies won the ladies category and were awarded Sh150, 000. A total of Sh1.2 million was awarded during the event.

“For those who have participated, you are all winners because this is just the beginning. We shall start this year’s tournament in October,” said the Governor.

The Governor’s Football Bonanza was organized to identify and nurture talent at the grassroots level, with Governor Barasa promising to form football academies to identify and nurture football talent across all the wards.
