A primary school in Embu has taken the lead in the country on the ongoing use of ICT integration in teaching and learning in primary schools.
St Michael Primary school in Embu West Sub County not only scooped the best position but also had three of her teachers taking the lead in their subjects.
The school’s head teacher Francis Njagi Karanja attributed the win to cordial working relationship among the teachers, parents and pupils.
“We have become the best primary school in digital learning in Kenya because since the inception of the digital learning, we have been having a good working environment resulting from cordial relationship among teachers, parents and pupils which has led to this achievement,” Njagi observed.
Ms. Eunice Wambui Munene, who scooped the first position in maths in the country, said the achievement would not have been possible if it were not for the cooperation and support she received from her colleagues and the school.
“In school, we have a very supportive system of parents, teachers and pupils which has helped not only in my achievement but that of the school,” noted Wambui.
Ms. Caroline Njue who scooped third position in Kiswahili said the walk to their achievement was not without challenges but they were able to overcome them.
“We faced challenges of tablets hanging and internet connectivity. However, through support from the school fraternity, we were able to overcome them,” noted Ms. Njue.
Ms. Wincate Mukami who was second in English said the win was a surprise to them and to the school because they participated and then forgot about the competition. However, they were excited about the win which has elevated their morale to do even better, she said.
The three noted that the introduction of the digital learning has changed the attitude of the learners and created interest in learning hence truancy has gone down.
The competition was introduced early 2018 ending in the month of August by the Ministry of Education and participants posted the lessons they had taught through a WhatsApp number where over 2, 000 teachers from over 700 schools participated.
The awards ceremony was held at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on Monday this week.
