Matatu Sacco introduces alcoblow to curb drunk driving

Public Service Operator, Neno Sacco, has introduced alcoblow to curb drunk driving and related accidents.

According to an official in charge of discipline Richard Njeru, the Sacco that plies the Nairobi-Embu route among others, will also be carrying out random breathalyzer tests for its drivers along the roads to ensure total compliance with the move.

Njeru said the self-regulatory move was informed by the need to curb cases of accidents and indiscipline associated with drunk driving that were on the rise.

Speaking on Friday at the Embu-Nairobi matatu termini, Njeru said the gadget will also eliminate complaints from drivers suspected to be drunk but who allege they are being unfairly targeted.

“The gadgets are fool-proof to determine whether a driver is drunk or not,” he said, adding that it was a huge investment given that a gadget goes for about Sh. 100, 000, but noted that it is a worthy cause in ensuring sanity is restored on the road.

Another official, Renson Njiru, said they had witnessed a big change since the devices were introduced, adding that the Sacco is committed to ensuring the drivers are compliant with all traffic regulations.

He asked the drivers to be careful on the road with regard to speeding to reduce road carnage.

Njiru asked passengers to report cases of their crews driving dangerously or carrying excess passengers to them for action to be taken.

“We do not entertain cases of indiscipline and we humbly ask our customers not to hesitate to report such cases to us,” he said.
